Delegation from the New Zainoel Abidin Hospital (ZAH), Banda Aceh, Indonesia, at EPOS headquarters in Bad Homburg, Germany
A delegation from the newly opened Zainoel Abidin Hospital (ZAH), Banda Aceh, Indonesia, came to Germany for a five day study tour at the end of March. The study tour, arranged by EPOS in conjunction with the Sustainability Phase of the KfW-funded project ‘Support to BPK Zainoel Abidin Hospital’, included visits to two German hospitals, a medical equipment supplier and the KfW & GTZ offices.

ZAH Director, Dr. Taufik Mahdi, and a team of seven ZAH staff specialists, first visited Horst-Schmidt Kliniken (HSK) in Wiesbaden. The group toured the hospital lab and was given an overview on financing of hospital services and the DRG system, as well as information on HSK’s arrangements for the care and treatment of private patients from overseas.

A visit was also made to Elisabeth Hospital, Essen, where the study tour group received an overview on quality management and procurement management as well as information regarding organisation of the cardiac centre combing internal medicine / interventional cardiology and cardio-surgery.

The visit to Elisabeth Hospital resulted in the agreement to establish a formal partnership between the two hospitals through a Partnership Agreement based on a Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement will focus on developing a long term professional relationship where ZAH management and clinical staff can benefit from training provided by staff from the Elisabeth Hospital. Staff of Elisabeth Hospital will visit ZAH and conduct skills updates for clinical specialists in highly specialised technical areas such as MRI diagnostics and Cardiac Catheterization, but also in areas of clinical quality management and general operational management of the ZAH.

The study tour included a visit to Fleischacker, a medical equipment supplier in Schwerte. The ZAH delegation were provided information about Mediconnect Software -- used to link high level technical medical equipment with the HMIS for digital transfer of data on clinical results (i.e. X-ray, ultrasound, CT-Scan, MRI, laboratory, etc).
